Dog Clothes - Fun And Functional

Let's face it, we put our pets in dog clothes just as much for us as we do for them. I truly believe that if our dogs could, they would often find a way to sue us for animal cruelty because of some of the outfits we dress them it. They would take one look in the mirror, be horrified at how they look, and lock themselves in a closet because we dress them in something dreadful that we think is cute.

But of course dog clothes have a functional side as well. Since theydog clothes really don't care how they look, the clothing we put them in helps to keep them warm and generally they are happy. Some breeds need this more than others. We own Miniature Pinschers and they do not do well in cold weather. Things like sweaters or coats actually become a necessity on winter walks. Many short haired breeds are like this.

When it's raining there are even raincoats and boots, although truth be told, most dogs have a hard time adjusting to those rubber boots.

The fact is that clothing for our pets is becoming more popular every day. And there are several reasons for this beyond just the practical side. You'll notice celebrities dressing up their dogs in the latest designer fashions. Like it or not, these have an impact on the culture at large, and everybody wants to keep up with the latest trends. Even items with almost no practical use are growing in sales. Things like ribbons, jewelry, bandannas and even Halloween costumes seem to fly off the store shelves. Small dog clothes are especially trendy as miniature and toy breeds continue to grow in popularity. Large dog items are probably a bit harder to find and of course more costly.

So now would be a good time for a word of caution, putting a heavy sweater or even a T-shirt on a dog with a lot of hair can cause problems, especially in the summer.

That being said, let's take a look at what's available.

Designer Dog Clothes - The name here says all you need to know. You'll be spending more (way more than you need to in most cases), but your pooch will have the look your friends will envy. If you've got the cash and love to dress up your pet, go for it.

Dog Dresses - Taking your little darling out for a night on the town? She'll look great (or maybe silly). But remember, if we're putting a dress on our dog, it's certainly more for us than it is for them. We simply want to draw attention to our pets.

Dog T-Shirts - This is another one that's more for us than our pets. A cute saying is always fashionable, or a rough design for a dog with a mean image.

Dog Sweaters, Sweatshirts & Coats - Now we're getting into the practical side of things, but that doesn't mean they can't look good as well. Keeping our pets warm and protected from the elements is the right thing to do. What we do it with says a lot about our pets and ourselves. Keep with the breed. That Harley sweater will look better on a Bulldog than it will on a Bichon.

Dog Shoes & Boots - Most vets will tell you these are not necessary, but there are times when it's a good idea. Exposure to ice can cause frostbite, the salt used to melt it can also cause damage to our pet's paws, and the boiling hot pavement is not good either.

Dog Bandannas - Designed for show, a bandanna will draw attention to your pet, and besides, they just look good.

Dog Pajamas - We assume most houses have air conditioning in the summer and heat in the winter. Are these really necessary?

One thing to remember, dog clothes don't have to be expensive. You can find cheap dog clothes just about anywhere, and they will serve the primary purpose well. Or, for an even less expensive solution, you can make them yourself. Your dog is just that...a dog. That means he's certainly liable to tear or chew up whatever you get him. He doesn't understand when he's wearing the latest designer label, he just wants to stay warm, or just have some fun. Don't get upset with him if he chews up that new $100 designer sweater but let him think it's OK to shred the $2.00 T-Shirt. He doesn't know the difference.

Some other things to think about. Does your dog have a doggie door that he regularly has to squeeze through? The sweater may catch and quickly be ruined. Consider something that is held on by Velcro to prevent the problem. And make sure whatever you buy doesn't have to be removed every time he needs to go out and do his business. This is incredibly inconvenient.

Buying dog clothes can be fun. And it's amazing the number of cute garments now available. Just be sure to be practical as well.
